How to Make MOUTHWASH At Home – Sea Salt Mouthwash Recipe

Making homemade mouthwash is extremely easy. Mouthwash can help reach areas of your mouth that brushing and flossing may miss.

I don’t like to store mouthwash products. Even the most natural ones usually contain glycerin. I try to avoid glycerin in my dental products. Also, they are too strong for me. Anyway, it’s extremely easy to make at home with the ingredients I’m okay with.

I like using Sea salt mouthwash since sea salt is great for dental health.

Sea salt mouthwash increases the pH of the mouth making it alkaline. This can help stop the growth of bacteria inside the mouth since harmful bacteria prefer an acidic environment.

Saltwater rinses can help decrease dental plaque according to a small 2017 study. It also reduces gum infection.

The mouthwash also contains baking soda, which alkalizes the mouth. Birch Xylitol is used as a sweetener, which is optional. Some essential oils are not good for tooth enamel, so use caution with them. I only use 1-3 drops of peppermint essential oil and it’s strong enough for me.

The recipe makes about 2 cups of mouthwash. If you need a stronger solution, you can reduce the water amount by half. For me, it’s simply perfect. Not too strong, not too weak.

What are the ingredients in this Tooth Remineralization Powder?

Given the right conditions, teeth can heal much like bones can.

The below tooth remineralization powder recipe contains calcium, baking soda, Himalayan sea salt, and some other optional ingredients.

If you are using essential oils, be very careful with your choice. Do not use lemon essential oil as it may degrade your enamel. Some essential oils are not safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding periods. Some of them are not safe when ingested. So, please do some research before using any of them.

The ingredients in my recipe:

Coral powder contains calcium and trace minerals.

Calcium phosphate is a bioavailable form of calcium, which will help remineralize teeth.

Himalayan sea salt provides trace minerals, heals gums, fights bad breath, soothes inflammation.

Baking soda is mildly abrasive, whitens teeth, is antibacterial, changes the pH to make the mouth less acidic.

Xylitol is a natural cavity fighter. It can cause the number of acid-producing bacteria to fall by as much as 90%. It also tastes great! It’s not good for digestion, but since we’re not eating this powder, it should be fine. Optional.

Charcoal – no, no, no! You may be tempted to add this ingredient as it is a trendy product right now (charcoal toothpaste, charcoal teeth whiteners, etc). I would never use any tooth product containing charcoal ever! I used charcoal toothpaste for a month and my tooth chipped/broke. Coincidence? Maybe. However, there are other people reporting the same experience with charcoal. Charcoal is a great toxin absorber, and it is a must-have product in my first aid kit, however, if I have to use it for my dental needs then maybe only once a month or never. I wonder if bentonite clay does the same thing to teeth. This needs some further research.

Bentonite clay absorbs toxins that inhibit oral health, whitens teeth, and offers trace minerals. There is a concern about clay containing lead, and whether the lead from clay is absorbed in the body or not.  This topic needs extensive research, so I won’t be using it for now. Also, my negative experience with charcoal made me a little skeptical about bentonite clay too. It’s up to you though. Many people use bentonite clay in their dental products.

Tooth Remineralizing Powder (Recipe #1)

Ingredients:
How to make tooth remineralization powder:
  1. Mix the ingredients in a glass jar. Cover the lid tightly and shake until well incorporated. Transfer some amount to a smaller jar and start using. Keep the cap tightly.
  2. Moisten toothbrush under the tap. It’s better to use filtered water with no fluoride to brush your teeth as fluoride will bind to your teeth preventing remineralization with calcium. Fluoride is harmful to the thyroid too.
  3. Stick your moistened toothbrush in the small jar and take up some of the tooth powder on the brush. Brush teeth as normal.
  4. If you are trying to remineralize your teeth hold the goop in your mouth for 60 seconds while you do something else. Do not swallow. The spit will be grey. Rinse your mouth with water.
  5. Brush at least twice a day. Floss once a day.
